19 Marketing Activities Consultants Can Use

Here are 19 different marketing avenues you can use to promote your consulting business. By no means is this list complete as I just sat down and rattled them off. After you read them why don’t you add any other marketing methods that have worked well for your consulting business or that you have heard of.

These categories are listed below by cost:

Low Cost Venues

  • Pro bono work
  • Referrals
  • Articles
  • Presentations and speeches
  • Newsletters
  • Case studies
  • Listings in directories

Medium Cost Venues

  • Web sites
  • Blogs
  • PPC campaigns
  • Surveys (online)
  • Press releases
  • Special reports
  • Consulting brochures

High Cost Venues

  • Writing books
  • Direct mail
  • Trade shows
  • Sponsored events
  • Surveys (traditional kind)

Each industry views these marketing activities differently. Overall, your consultancy’s relationships, web site, blogs, PPC campaigns, articles, books, special reports and speeches can be the most productive marketing tools in your arsenal.

Make sure you clearly communicate your USP (your advantage) in every activity you take on. Be sure that you’re going to deliver something different or better than anyone else in your niche – if not, you’re message will get lost in the crowd – find a way to raise people’s interest and you’ll be off to a running start.

Whatever you do, be careful not to follow mass marketing advertising where the result is often only to win the momentary cheers and interest of prospects.

A direct marketing method where you measure and test several approaches, offers, headlines and prices will yield the best results. Why? Because you will be continually improving.

Don’t fret when failure shows its head. The most successful long-term marketing efforts are often the result of several trial and error runs. If you stick to it wit the goal of continual improvement success is as guaranteed as it can ever come.

What other methods can you add to this list?
